Sangiran

Sangiran is located 15 km from Surakarta. It is a village located 17 Km north of Solo, on the road to Purwodadi. It is an important place for Pithecanthropus Erectus, the pre-historic Java man. It is fossilized land of prehistoric living things. The Pleistocene Museum keeps some skills of the erectus, fossils of plants and animals. Sangiran and other places such as Wajak (near Tulungangung) and Trinil (near Ngawi) are significant places for human evolution/theory. It is interesting place for scientific tourism in the field of geology, anthropology and archeology. Many experts came to this site to do some research and study among other; Van Es (1939), Duyfyes (1936), Van Bemmelen (1937), Van Koeningswald (1938), Sartono (1960), Suradi (1962) and Otto Sudarmaji (1976). Van Koeningswald said that more than five different types of hominoid fossils have been found in Sangiran, it was incredible. There is no other place in the world like Sangiran. The Sangiran fossils are very various, they were earth as well as sea fossils. There was a possibility that island of Java was erected from the bottom of sea million years ago.

In 1891, Eugene Dubois, a French anthropologist discovered fossils of Pithecanthropus Erectus, the oldest Java man known. Again in 1930 and 1931, Ngandong Village, Trinil-Mojokerto, was marked with the discovery of fossils of a man that belonged to the Pleistocene Period. It revealed human history from many centuries ago. Prof. Dr. Van Koenigswald in 1936 found more evidence about human evolution. He discovered some fossils that support the theory of human growth from an ape-man to be man as we are now. Other fossils including those of mammoths (prehistoric elephant) are now preserved in the Bandung Geological Museum. In mid 1980, the finding of a complete 4 m tall elephant startled scientists. Nowadays, the villagers of Sangiran are making souvenirs from stones such as statues, axes, eggs, rings, etc to promote tourism.

Bali Proposes Three Sites to UNESCO

Jero Wacik, the Culture and Tourism Minister, said that three cultural sites in Bali have been proposed as world heritage sites to the UNESCO. They are: the paddy terraces of Jatiluwih in Tabanan; Taman Ayun Temple in Mengwi and a site in the river basin area of Pakerisan, Gianyar.

“A verification process is being done to assess their feasibility,” said Wacik yesterday at the Bali World Culture Forum (BWCF) in Sanur, Denpasar. Several archeological sites in Indonesia have earned the world heritage status, such as the Sangiran archeological site, the Borobudur Temple and the Prambanan Temple complex.

According to Wacik, the three sites were proposed because of their cultural values—in addition to their beautiful panorama. The Jatiluwih terrace fields, for example, are a form of respect towards nature and the environment. Therefore, the farmers working at the foot of Mount Batukaru refuse to use chemical fertilizer and insecticide.

Wacik said there are several benefits of earning the world heritage status. Besides being able to promote the location to the world, the site’s maintenance will also be supported. “Repairs will be given assistance should there be any damages, as in the case of the Prambanan Temples after the Yogya earthquake,” said Wacik.

Wacik said the BWCF is a step towards the World Cultural Forum which will be held in Bali in 2012. The forum will feature studies of local values which can contribute towards building a better world in the future. “We start by featuring the Balinese cultural values,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Komodo National Park’s position as one of the nominees for the new7wonders (N7W) is progressing. Currently, the island is at 7th position out of 28 finalists of the N7W. According to Ubaldus Gogi, the East Nusa Tenggara Tourism Promotion Board director, the position has shifted because it depends on incoming votes. He hoped Indonesians will keep submitting their votes to support the Komodo National Park.

Wacik admitted that he was not too worried about the park’s chances of being one of the seven wonders of the world, because the island has claimed the world heritage status from the UNESCO since 1991 in the Natural Sites category.

Indonesia is more than just a honeymoon destination

Bali, beautiful island of Indonesia filled with luxury resorts and hotels, has been grabbing the attention of Korean tourists, particularly after Korea’s hugely famous celebrity couple Jang Dong-gun and Ko So-young chose Bali for their honeymoon last year.

However, the South Asian country has a lot more to offer, a tourism official said.

“Not just Bali, we have 13,000 small and big islands where you can explore not only great natural atmosphere but also unique and diverse culture still alive on each island,” Sapta Nirwandar, director general for Tourism Marketing at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Indonesia, told The Korea Herald.

Nirwandar was in Seoul to participate in the Korea World Travel Fair held at COEX on Jun. 2-5. He was the head of the Indonesian delegation consisting of officials from the Culture and Tourism Ministry, Regional Culture and Tourism Office of Bali Province, tour operators, and hoteliers.
The event hoped to give Koreans a closer look into Indonesia’s tourism industry, said Nirwandar who claims to be a true galbi lover.

Komodo Island, for instance, is highly recommended for families seeking an exotic vacation destination.

“There is a real Jurassic park that still exists on the island, a perfect place for families with kids,” the 57-year-old official said.

“Even though we don’t have direct flights from Incheon to those islands, you can go to many different regions via Jakarta,” he added.

The number of Korean visitors to Indonesia has been growing steadily.

In 2009, nearly 240,000 Korean tourists visited the Southeast Asian country, while in 2010, the number grew up to 281,785 or 17.93 percent, he said.

The growing number of visitors reflects the increasing demand for eco-tourism among Korean tourists. But it is Indonesia’s culture that makes it more unique than other Southeast Asian countries.

“We are trying to go green as this is an international issue but still we are based in culture. Indonesia is famous for its unique, diverse culture,” he said.

“Wonderful Indonesia” is the new catchphrase coined to better promote the country’s beautiful nature, unique culture, varied culinary traditions, hospitable people and price competitiveness in various kinds of services. The Indonesian government will also step up securing more bids for international events to position the country as preferred destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions, the official said.

Dieng Less Shaky, but Still Unsafe From Toxic Gas

Seismic activity at Mount Dieng in Central Java has calmed down, but officials are not lowering its alert level as the volcano continues to spew dangerous amounts of toxic gas.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said the level of carbon dioxide in the air at Timbang crater was 1.54 percent on Sunday, up from 1.18 percent the previous day.

A percentage greater than 0.5 is dangerous for humans. Experts have said that the gas, if inhaled in large amounts, could be fatal.

Officials first raised the alert on Dieng at the end of May from level 2 to level 3, which meant the volcano was showing signs of an imminent eruption. A state of emergency was declared and more than a thousand residents were ordered to evacuate.

Sutopo said on Sunday that the BNPB had given the local administration Rp 250 million ($29,000) to buy food for more than 1,000 evacuees who were living in temporary shelters in Batur, Pejawaran, Wanayasa and Karangkobar.

All the residents have been instructed to remain at the shelters and people are prohibited from entering a zone within a one kilometer radius of the crater.

However, some residents have reportedly ignored the warnings and returned to their homes during the day to take care of their livestock and plantations. “They only come back to the shelter at night,” Sutopo said.

He also said officials had installed five new earthquake detectors, which can not only monitor ground movement but also the release of toxic gases from below. It was reported on Friday that earthquake detectors installed that day had been stolen.

Surono, head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), told Antara state news agency on Sunday that even though tremors were becoming less frequent, people living near the volcano needed to stay alert because there was still a possibility that Dieng could erupt.

In 1979, carbon dioxide from Timbang crater, one of the most active among the volcano’s six craters, killed 149 people. During the rainy season, the greenhouse gas stays close to the surface of the earth, making it deadlier.

Dieng Plateau, where the volcano is located, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Central Java.

The area is the site of eight small Hindu temples dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. It also draws tourists because of its sulfur lakes.

Earlier, Winarno Sudjas, the marketing director at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, said that soon after reports were published that the volcano was emitting poisonous gases, tourist traffic to the area dropped by 70 percent from the average 1,500 visitors per day.

Jogja Java Carnival Costs Rp2 Billion

Yogyakarta’s anniversary this year will be enlivened by the Jogja Java Carnival which carries the theme, “Yogyakarta to be a Wonder of the World.” The carnival is budgeted at Rp2.05 billion, which will feature: the main show - a Jogja mozaic parade; festivals in 45 districts; and a finale that will be held on October 22. “We will involve every municipality to support this fourth carnival,” said Yulia Rustiyaningsih, the Yogyakarta Culture and Tourism Board director, yesterday.

In addition, there will be five supporting events: a Javanese fashion festival—Yogyakarta-style, painting and coloring competition, batik fashion show, bike community contest, a marching band, and a national marching band competition. The events will be held in observance of Yogyakarta’s 255th anniversary on October 7.

The Rp2.05 billion funds will be allocated from Yogyakarta’s regional budgets (APBD), to be disbursed as follows: Rp1.5 billion for the Jogja Java Carnival, Rp100 million for the Jogja mozaic parade and Rp450 million to subsidize the municipalities.

Yulia stated that the main parade will be enlivened by cultural and arts performances from various countries and different regions in Indonesia while the supporting parade will be brightened by cultural groups from Yogyakarta’s municipalities. Several art groups that have confirmed their attendance come from Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and China. “In this year’s Jogja Carnival celebration we will sell VVIP tickets to reduce the financing burden from the regional budget,” she said.

There will be two sections reserved for tourists: the VVIP seats in the North Square of the Sultan’s Palace and in front of Vredeburg Fortress. The tickets will be sold for Rp150,000 for the main seats, Rp200,000 for priority main seats, Rp250,000 for VIPs, and Rp500,000 for VVIPs.

According to Ferry Astono, the Yogyakarta Anniversary Committee chairman, the city’s anniversary celebration will be held on October 6-22. “This will be an annual event that is expected to attract tourists,” he added.

Meanwhile, Herry Zudianto, the Yogyakarta mayor, hopes that Yogyakarta’s anniversary will be celebrated by all local communities, including the public, businessmen and the officials. “The Jogja Java Carnival, which will start in the evening, is the only night carnival in the world,” said Herry. The cultural parade of Yogyakarta’s anniversary will coincide with the wedding of one of Sultan’s daughters.

The Beauty of Belitung

Beautiful beaches, tasty noodles, mining lakes and satam stones are four popular things that describe Belitung Island.

A bout with smallpox forced me to drop my plan to visit Belitung last year. My dreams of enjoying its pristine beaches were shattered just a week before my departure to the island.

“You must go on bed rest for 14 days and avoid windy and dusty places,” the doctor told me, ignoring my plea for speedy recovery or the fact that I had made an A-to-Z itinerary for the trip months ago with a friend.

This year, all my disappointment paid off — I finally got my chance to take a trip to the island and explore its beautiful scenery.

Situated off the eastern coast of Sumatra, Belitung is known one of the world’s main tin-producing centers, but it rose to fame as an exotic tourism getaway after the movie Laskar Pelangi (the Rainbow Troops), a story based on the best-selling novel by Andrea Hirata on the struggles that some children in Belitung faced in reaching their dreams, hit the cinema in September 2008.

Thousands of tourists, both local and foreign, began to flock to the island to discover what it had to offer as well to take a closer look at the locations where Laskar Pelangi was filmed.

My two best friends and I decided to join a tour group going to West and South Belitung recently.

We were lucky to have Kurniadi, 38, as our tour guide because he showed us some immaculate spots, far from the hustle and bustle of tourists.

Accor to open 21 new hotels throughout Indonesia

International hotel management chain Accor, the largest hotel operator in Asia and the Pacific, will open 21 new hotels in Indonesia, one of its fastest growing markets in Asia, an executive says.

Michael Issenberg, the chairman and chief operating officer of Accor Asia Pacific, said Tuesday that the plan would help his company benefit from surging travel in the country.

“Indonesia’s economic growth will push up volumes of business travel and tourism. With our vast hotel networks in Indonesia, we will strengthen Accor brands and expand our business here,” he said when announcing the plan.

Issenberg said Accor was targeting domestic tourists traveling throughout the country.

“Certainly in Bali there are more overseas tourists. But, like everywhere else in the world, our hotels in Indonesia will depend on between 80 and 90 percent domestic tourists,” he said.

He said the new hotels would be managed under various brands, including Pullman, Novotel, ibis, all seasons and Formule 1.

They will be located in Greater Jakarta and other major cities: Pekanbaru, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Denpasar, Banjarmasin, Palu and Makassar.

According to Issenberg, out of the 21 hotels, nine will be economy hotels under the ibis and all seasons brands, while four hotels will be budget hotels under the Formule 1 brand.

“First travel experience is more budget- and economy-oriented. These segments will have the biggest growth in the next five to ten years in Indonesia,” he said, adding that such a condition would be enabled by the improving situation of the Indonesian people as a result of economic growth.

Accor Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore vice president Gerard Guillouet said Accor was expanding to cities outside Java and Bali because business activities were spreading to those areas.

“Thanks to local autonomy, investments flow to other places outside Jakarta and other cities in Java and Bali. Coupled with the development of budget airlines, this supports the development of the hotel market outside the region,” he said.

Accor first entered Indonesia in 1993 and currently operates 40 hotels in 18 cities nationwide, out of more than 4,000 hotels worldwide under brands such as Mercure, ibis and Novotel. On average, its occupancy rate is around 75 percent.

Earlier this year, Accor announced a plan to open 13 new hotels by 2013, including Mercure hotels in Padang, Jakarta, Bali and Banjarmasin, all seasons hotels in Pangkal Pinang, Jakarta and Yogyakarta, and ibis hotels in Surabaya, Bali, Balikpapan and Manado.

This culture Prince Diponegoro, riding warrior from the land of Java with a white turban and dagger weapon is. History of Prince Diponegoro’s struggle can not be released to the existence of sacred places, this one, namely Goa Selarong. During the Diponegoro resistance against the Dutch in 1825 until 1830, Goa Selarong is the key to the success of the struggle Selarong Diponegoro and the army. In addition to hiding place, this place is also used as a base to set strategies to drive the Company from the land of Java. Location of Goa region Selarong included in the Dusun Kembang ofwhite, Guwosari Village, Sub-Display, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Location was in the southern city of Gudeg these, approximately 30 km from the city center or if using a land route will take approximately 45 minutes duration. Complex Goa Selarong limestone hills located approximately 35 m tall covered by shady trees labat nan. Its location is very steep, the slope can be about 45 degrees. To achieve that, whoever the person has to walk hundreds of steps as far as 400 m to get to that place.
Selarong Goa is shaped narrow with a width of approximately only 3 m and a height of no more than 2 m, while the length to it only about 3 m only. Nothing special about this form Selarong Goa. The Javanese call this cave species such as cave buntet alias not transparent perforated appendicitis. So, this cave is a rock basin plain without any copy into. It is said by Sarimin (75) the caretaker complex Selarong Goa, Goa is indeed visible Selarong is a dead end, but for the Diponegoro and his followers, Goa Selarong a magic door to enter into the bowels of the hill towards the chalk. “Although the cave is a dead end, but Prince Diponegoro and his bodyguard could penetrate to the inside, as if able to stay inside the hill. So, Goa Selarong just as magical door entrance only and the actual cave is far in it, “he said. That’s why that makes why Prince Diponegoro and loyal troops will be very difficult to catch and had never touched or even seen by the eyes of Dutch troops, if you’re hiding in Goa this Selarong. Although the Dutch troops had arrived at the compound, but the troops of the Company still can not see that in fact there are hundreds of Diponegoro’s troops hiding in Goa Selarong. Company troops just spinning in place and could only see mountains uninhabited rock.
Not surprisingly, then to provoke a Diponegoro for going out of Goa Selarong, Dutch Company by General De Kock had to do political race by bringing sheep to negotiate Diponegoro in Magelang in around 1830, to then catch and mengasingkannya to Makassar, South Sulawesi until the end his death in 1855. Selarong sacred cave complex with his magical cave door named Goa Selarong is already famous for Javanese society ears today. This complex was fairly wingit aka haunted, on some nights like Friday night or Tuesday night POND POND, sometimes from the belly of Goa Selarong sounded rebound gising-gising Java that is being sounded. There was his voice, but no form. That said it is believed, on the second day of the supernatural are gathered in Temat sacred places, including in Goa this Selarong. At that moment, from night until dawn scattered like the smell of incense and incense must be very clear this Selarong burst of Goa.

Even so, there are some restrictions that should not be done in Goa this Selarong, that is asking pesugihan or request a toggle number. “It was a very unpopular by the occult in Goa Selarong. If it is banned, disaster will surely befall anyone who violated that, “said grandfather four grandchildren. The disaster could happen right on the spot, such as slip or fall off a cliff to result in death. Even if not in place, on the other disaster where it must be approached. “If you want to find pesugihan or find a number, do not be in place here, look elsewhere mending it,” remembers Sarimin
