Indonesia’s 1st PGA Championships to tee off in Tangerang

The inaugural Indonesia Professional Golf Association (PGA) championship and Series was launched at Imperial Golf Club in Karawaci, Tangerang, Banten, on Tuesday.

The tournament, titled “The Journey of Feeling” is part of the 13 OneAsia golf tournaments scheduled this year.

“The championships are expected to promote the diversity of Indonesian culture and beauty,” Martha Silalahi Sidebang, president director of event promoter PT Rajawali Sport International said in a press conference at Aryaduta Hotel in Karawaci on Tuesday.

“We intentionally chose seven cities as the hosts of PGA championships so that participants from Asia-Pacific countries and Australia can also discover and enjoy the richness and beauty of Indonesia’s cultures and tourism,” she said.

Among the locations are Tangerang, Surabaya, Bali, Medan, Bandung and Lombok.

Indonesian Amateur Golfers Association (PGI) advisor Nursalam Tabusalla said that it was time for Indonesian golfers to prove that they are capable of competing with international golfers.

“Our golfers only need chances and the tournament is just one of those chances,” he said, adding that PGI has scheduled 18 golf tournament events this year and plans to organize 26 tournaments next year.

He said to achieve good performances in the events, PGI has changed the paradigm of local golfers from teaching to practicing.

“We have numerous young golfers who work as golf coaches on a daily basis, but now we tell them to practice more instead of teaching,” he said.

Ben Sellenger, chief of OneAsia tournament event organizer, said Indonesia has become one of the most important destinations for golf tournaments because the country had grown as a tourism destination.

“PGA championship and the Series will be significant events for OneAsia and we always want to return to similar events in the coming years,” he said, adding that all professional golfers should try their luck at the upcoming event worth US$1 million in prize money.
