Carrier Garuda has confirmed that it will offer direct flights to India from Indonesia in the second half of the year.
Tempo Interaktif claims that the airline is hoping to gain regulatory approval so that it can benefit on the increasing demand for flights linking the two countries.
Garuda's information technology and strategic director, Elisa Lumbantoruan, explained that the current market is "very open" as no other airline currently offers travellers the option to take a direct service to India from Indonesia.
It is expected that Garuda will introduce the new route with a daily flight to Chennai and Mumbai from Jakarta but could eventually offer an additional service from Denpasar in the long-term.
The airline is planning to increase its fleet in 2011 with the addition of the first of ten Boeing B777-300 ER aircraft.
