Indonesia is known as a country with many cultural diversities. Within this territory, there lies more than 13,000 islands. Indonesia also has hundreds of tribes, with each having their own tradition of culture and art.
One of these Indonesian traditions is the angklung. The angklung is a musical instrument made of bamboo tubes, originating in the West Java area, and used by the Sundanese people.
The angklung's music art has spread becoming quite popular worldwide. The artist societies play this musical instrument for many cultural events around the world.
The effort to popularize the angklung has received a positive response from the UNESCCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). At Its meeting on November 16, 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya, UNESCO recognized and endorsed the instrument as a piece of Indonesia heritage. Submission of the certificate from Unesco was held at 19, 01, 2011 last Wednesday by Mr. Tresna Generous Kunaefi the former Ambassador of Indonesia to UNESCO to the National Education Minister Mohammad Nuh.
With this recognition, Mr. Tresna believes that the Indonesia people and government must preserve the angklung. "The angklung values to build character. There must be cooperation in playing angklung to produce a beautiful harmony," Tresna said.
