Bali For Single

The world’s favourite holiday island has a lot to offer for every kind of single

Single but wants to mingle
Venues, especially nightlife joints get crowded seasonally in Bali. But the good thing about a holiday island is that almost everyone is open for a quick chat or two. The Living Room’s bar (Jl. Oberoi, Petitenget, T: 0361 735 735, www.thelivingroom-bali.com) is small, therefore it feels crowded on most nights. Across the street, Hu’u (Jl. Oberoi, Petitenget, T: 0361 736 443, www.huubali.com) is also a good place to mingle. The trick here is to stay at the bar because people who occupy the tables are often with their fiends, hence more difficult to approach. And if you feel like going to a more alternative-slash-underground place, The Cave (no address as it’s underground, you see, so you must ask around) is often frequented by the island’s hipsters and what not.

Single and wants to stay single
To avoid people, East Bali is a very good place. Head down to Amed or Candidasa to spend quality time with yourself. Alila Manggis (www.alilahotels.com/manggis) and Amankila (www.amanresorts.com/amankila) are two of the poshest resorts there that can provide with you with the sort of solitude you are looking for in style.

Single and looking for a sparkle (or two)
The House of Jemme in Seminyak (Jl. Raya Petitenget No. 28, Kerobokan, T: 0361 732 392, www.jemmebali.com) is full of shiny and sparkly things made of silver, all kinds of gold and precious stones. The shop looks fancy, but don’t feel intimidated as they have things for as little as Rp. 150,000, and up to, well, the entire contents of your bank account. Try out their restaurant too – good food, a big wine selection and reasonable prices.

Single because emotionally cripple
I’m afraid there is no cure for you if you’re a psychopath – or if you read Albert Camus’ “The Stranger” and identify with the main character. But if you are simply a lost soul, Fivelements Puri Ahimsa (Banjar Baturning, Mambal, T: 0361 469 206, www.fivelements.org) might be able to help you. The resort-cum-healing-centre offers all kinds of programmes that can mould you back into a healthy, happy human being again.

Single and looking for some laughter
Harry Juku restaurant (Jl. Raya Petitenget 919, T: 0361 732 884, www.harryjuku.com) conducts regular comedy nights performed by Bali Comedy Club. On top of being a good place to laugh and feel happy, it’s also a good place to meet likeminded people. Finding good-looking people, or rich ones isn’t difficult (whether or not they fancy you back is another story), but finding people with a great sense of humour is quite a challenge.

Single and it doesn’t matter
So what exactly do you want? Do try out the island’s latest hip beachside lounge, Potato Head Beach Club (Jl. Petitenget, Seminyak, T: 0361 737 979), which is making everyone curious and excited, while La Plancha (Jl. Double Six Beach) offers a more modest beach lounging environement, and sometimes even more fun.

Single and looking for some adventure
Book a cruise with Waka Land Cruise (Jl. Padang Kartika 5x, Padang Sambian Kelod, T: 0361 426 972, www.wakaland.com) and explore the more challenging off-the-road routes of Bali on their 4x4 Land Rover Defender. It’s one of the better ways to see the less-travelled sides and facets of the island.

Single and wants to get back in the saddle
Umalas is home for a very fine stable. Umalas Stables (Jl. Lestari 9x, Banjar Umalas Kauh, Kerobokan, T: 0361 731 402/ 742 1893, www.balionhorse.com), also known as The Umalas Equestrian Resort, offers horse-riding experiences for all ages and all experience levels – personal trainers are available. Riding a horse on the beach at sunset is the epitome of cheese, but who cares when you’ve just been dumped, right?

Single and searching for a good tipple (or 50)
Dipsomaniacs in Bali don’t have to travel all the way to Ubud to enjoy potent martinis and margaritas anymore. Naughty Nuri’s has duplicated itself and resides in Batu Belig (Jl. Batu Belig No. 41, Kerobokan, T: 0361 847 6722, www.naughtynurisbali.com). However, Nuri’s virgins should be aware that these tipples are very evil – in the nicest possible way, of course – and they cause “things” to happen.
