Sandeq boat races

Sandeq is traditional boat from Mandar. Sandeq race professionally designed by Horst in 1995. Sandeq Race is an effort to preserve and continue the culture of the endangered marine Mandar. Sandeq teach young fishermen to read a current, reading the wind, and rituals that exist in it. Also Sandeq also serve as a means of transportation in the past traders sailed the seas to sell agricultural products.

Boat Sandeq, have characteristics that distinguish from most other bercadik boat. In fact, Sandeq has been steered by foreign nations across the ocean, such as to Australia and America.

Boat-shaped pointy-tipped bercadik (taper) and paint white average is now mostly replaced by motorized boats used Mandar fishermen since last few years. Sandeq boat race is one sport that provides a challenge to the participants who will race. The participants will be challenged to navigate the sea along the 300 miles stretching from Mamuju, West Sulawesi up to Makassar, South Sulawesi by the mileage 300 miles of sea.

Thousands of people spilled into the beach to watch Sandeq from his village to compete in the annual feast Mandar fishermen that has now become the annual agenda. When traced back, in fact Sandeq racing has been around since the 1960s. In the past, the race was called the market competition, because Sandeq hired by the traders to transport merchandise into every market in the coastal village between Majene and Mamuju.
