State railway firm PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) expects to launch the Padang-Minangkabau International Airport commuter railway route in April 2012.
KAI West Sumatra Regional Division spokesman Syafrial Romeo said that in the early stages the new railway could only serve the route from Padang to the Duku station in Padangpariaman because the firm was still waiting for land acquisition rights for railway construction connecting the airport.
“KAI is still in the process of land acquisition for the construction of a 4.2-kilometer railway from Duku station to Minangkabau airport, which has charged the province a budget of Rp 5 billion (US$550,357),” he said Friday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Syafrial said that construction of the new railway would cost Rp 114.3 billion and the government had already allocated Rp 56.5 billion during the first phase.
