Indonesia hopes the Asia-Australasia Oceania (AAO) water skiing championship in Danau Sunter, North Jakarta, on October 6 to 10 will become a momentum for the sport`s revival in the country.
"We hope the championship will revive the sport in this country where it has almost been forgotten," Denny Boestami, secretary general of the All Indonesia Water Skiing Association (PSASI), said after a meeting with the general chairman of the Indonesia National Sports Committee (KONI) and the Indonesia Sports Committee (KOI), Rita Subowo, here on Monday.
Indonesia last staged an Asia-Pacific level water skiing event 24 years ago in Bedugul, Bali.
Also attending the meeting was organizing committee chief Commodore Didit Herdiyawan, who is also chief of staff of the Western Fleet.
The championship will be attended by 111 athletes from 17 participating countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Lebanon, India, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, China, China Taipeim, the Philippines and Indonesia.
Denny said Indonesia as host would field 22 athletes but PSAS set no high target but only expected a second place for Asia Zone.
"To dominate Australasia and Oceania I think it would be very hard as there is Australia there which is predicted to have reliable power in the sport," he said.
The general chairman of PSASI, TNI commander Admiral Agus Suhartono, is scheduled to attend the official opening at Hotel Sunlake, Sunter, North Jakarta, on October 7.
